What An Essendon Fan Has Thought Of The Last 24 Hours

After the siren sounded on Sunday night to end the final game of the round between Essendon and Port Adelaide, an already heavily criticized Essendon Football club was questioned by the press and their fans including myself.

An 84 point loss to an average team that needed to prove themselves after a week in the headlines was the last thing Essendon needed as we come to the end of a disappointing season by Ben Rutten and his team, dropping 7 places on the ladder from last year and marking Rutten’s biggest loss as coach.

The game was practically over at half time with Port already piling 74 points on the board to Essendon’s 23. A feeling felt before by bombers supporters this season.

I myself stopped watching and instead watched Sydney end Collingwood’s 11 game winning streak (about time!). I was keeping an eye on the score and hoping things would pick up but they never did. In fact quite the opposite happened. Our fourth quarter performance was dreadful with the AFL saying  “Another walk-in goal for Port Adelaide to finish off the game…”, which summed up our poor effort.

ANOTHER??! I mean seriously!

In the post game press conference Ben Rutten said “[the performance] is not something we certainly want to stand for and something our members and supporters should have to watch.”

It’s almost an apology for the poor performance but we’ve heard this before. The “It’s not where we want to be” stuff.

Today though has been rough. This morning, Essendon’s president Paul Brasher stepped down and there were talks in the media for Ben Rutten to have a farewell match next week against the Tigers. Club CEO Xavier Campbell stated that Ben Rutten will be Essendon’s coach next season and they have no intention on hiring someone else for the job.

This also sparked talk about getting 4x premiership ex-coach Alastair Clarkson to the Hangar and recently it has been reported that Essendon have had a talk with Clarkson’s management about the job.

We have to keep in mind though that Rutten is still contracted until 2023 and he will have 1 more season to prove himself at the Bombers.

And I hope he does not just because I want him to stay but I’m sick of watching Essendon in 2022.

Sorry this is a short blog. I just wanted to get my thoughts about the situation out there.
