Campbell Out. Where Does This Put The Bombers?

Campbell out. Where does this put the Bombers?

Paul Brasher, Ben Rutten and now Xavier Campbell have left the Essendon Football Club meaning that the club is left without a Coach and CEO as they go into the off-season after a poor year.

The departures have all come within a week of themselves as the team has faced the criticism by media and fans of its horrific year. The Bombers slipped from 8th in 2021 under new Coach, Ben Rutten to 15th this season and it became very clear that the players behind closed doors weren’t liking Rutten’s coaching style.

The players threw their support behind Rutten but there were still 80,000 members and even more fans that said he should go.

On Sunday morning Essendon released a Club Statement that carried the news of Rutten’s departure, a decision made by newly sworn in President David Barham.

The Essendon Football Club has released another Club Statement as I am writing this confirming that Xavier Campbell is in fact resigning. It says that he announced his resignation to the Club only a couple of hours ago at a meeting.

“We will commence the process to appoint a new Chief Executive in the coming days, and Xavier will assist in this transition phase. We are now in a strong position to continue our pursuit for the ultimate success for our teams.”

Campbell, while not having the CEO role anymore, will still work at Essendon to find a replacement CEO and possibly coach before he fully leaves if he does at all.

“The process to select the next CEO of the Essendon Football Club will commence immediately. In the interim, Chief Commercial Officer Nick Ryan will assume the role as acting CEO.”

So where does this put Essendon now? Are they in a rebuild?

Kind of. I definitely think that Essendon will take a season to get back on their legs but it won’t be a long term one like the supplements saga. And who knows, the Bombers have a good group of players and like they showed this year they can beat top 8 teams like Sydney. They could be back in top 8 contention next year.

Starting fresh is a good start if Essendon wants to build a finals winning side and Xavier Campbell knows this and wants Essendon to win more than anyone.

We’ll have to keep an eye on what happens in the coming weeks with appointing a new Coach and now, a new CEO.
