Will Carlton Make Finals?

Carlton have been showing good form this year but will their horrid run of injuries ruin their finals dreams? Let’s have a look realistically and see what me and others have thought.

Carlton have been impressive this season and really looked like their rebuild could be over and could be finishing in the top 8 for the first time since 2013 (by default).

They’ve been a powerhouse club this year and have been contending for a top four spot for most of the year but in the last 6 rounds they’ve only won 2 games against sides in poor form and all of a sudden fighting to make finals at all.

Carlton are currently 7th with 48 points. They mathematically could still finish 3rd but I wouldn’t put any money on it or, for Blues fans, get your hopes up at all. Richmond, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs all have a chance to move up the ladder and knock Carlton out of the top 8.

With only 2 rounds left in the 2022 season before finals, Carlton will have to win both of their remaining games to stay in the top 8 and qualify for the finals. The only problem for Carlton is that they will be entering both of these games as underdogs.

Next week against an out of form, but still very good Melbourne side who also just happen to be last year's Premiers. Their last 5 games looks like Christmas lights having a loss to Geelong, a win to Port Adelaide, a loss to the Dogs, a well needed win to Fremantle and finally a loss to Collingwood on Friday. LWLWL. Anyone that can identify patterns can tell you that things aren’t looking good for Carlton next week.

Unfortunately for Carlton, next week the Western Bulldogs and Richmond are favourites and playing in games they should win which will leave the final round an interesting one for everyone watching and an important, stressful time for Carlton fans.

Round 23 is where things get interesting. Carlton face off against Collingwood in a Sunday afternoon blockbuster. Collingwood will be favourites but we do know how they’ve been winning their games in the final minutes recently so anything could happen.

Richmond and the Western Bulldogs both have opponents that they should beat making Carlton’s finals chances even more slim.

It also doesn’t help that Carlton’s injury list has been building and building with players like Ed Curnow, Liam Stocker and Matthew Kennedy on the sidelines.

Recently, captain Patrick Cripps will miss the rest of the home and away season with a 2 week suspension after a careless bump on Callum Ah Chee in the weekend's game against the Lions. I think Patty might get away with only a 1 week suspension or even a fine if the Blues choose to go to the tribunal.

Will Carlton make the top 8?

Fox footy gave their top 8 predictions with Carlton nowhere to be seen.

Realistically? Carlton are coming 9th. Injuries, opponents and poor form say that Carlton aren’t making finals.

For the long run I think this could be the slap in the face they need to be a successful football club. They’ll review the bottom half of this season and come back next year fit, firing and ready to have a crack for that one day in September.
