Ben Rutten leaves Essendon

On Sunday Morning the Essendon Football Club released a Club Statement that had the expected news of Ben Rutten’s departure from the team. Rutten was contracted until the end of the 2023 AFL season but with Essendon’s poor form and doubt in the club by critics and fans, new president David Barham let Rutten know they were to be terminating his contract. The decision came after a 66 point loss to Richmond the night before in what was supposed to be Essendon “proving themselves” after a nightmare of a week the week prior. The club will begin to look into coaches before off-season training begins.

The dogs came home with the 4 points down in Launceston in a close match against 13th placed Hawthorn in a game that should have been a certain victory for the Dogs but was anything but. The Hawks were deadly accurate unlike the Dogs who had 15 behinds to the Hawks 4. Hawthorn were in front for most of the first half but the Dogs soon showed their experience against the young Hawks outfit, running aways with the game by 23 points and putting themselves in a good position to make the 8. They now just had to rely on Collingwood to beat Carlton which should be a straightforward task right?

Collingwood does it again against Carlton

Wrong. Collingwood just doesn't know how to lose at the G. After losing to Sydney last week, the Pies had something to prove and they showed it. They came out firing putting 36 points on the board to Carlton’s 17. Not the most accurate kicking for either team. Carlton came out after the main break and piled on 8 goals 3 behinds and as said by 7AFL’s Twitter “Carlton Can smell finals” as they prepared to enter the final quarter with a comfortable 4 goal lead. Collingwood had other plans and did what they are so good at. Winning. I was actually there and it was very refreshing going to a football game as a mutual supporter, especially one this close and exciting. Seeing Jamie Elliot do Jamie Elliot things with a minute left and the game on the line made this game the best game I have ever been to.

Sydney hold on against Saints late efforts

Sydney secured their top 4 spot as they hung on against the Saints who must have only realised at 3 quarter time that if they won they could make finals. St Kilda started making a late comeback in the 4th quarter and at one point had clawed Sydney’s 23 point lead down to only 7 points. But the Swans showed why they are premiership contenders and held on to win by 13 points at Marvel Stadium. I saw that Max King must have taken some kicking lessons over the week as he booted 5 goals straight to keep the Saints with a chance after kicking 5 behinds with no goals to his name last week in their 15 point loss to Brisbane.

If you have a Carlton mate just send them a text or go over and visit them to make sure they’re ok. Carlton have had a tough 10 years or so and this year really showed they can be up there with the best. Unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be as Carlton slipped to 9th at the round's end. Only 0.6% behind the Western Bulldogs. I think this might be what they need if they want to win a Premiership in the next 5 years. Like what happened to Melbourne; they finished 5th in 2018 after a couple of years down the bottom and Dee's supporters had hope that their footy team could win a premiership in the near future. Then, in 2019, they slumped back down to 17th. A bit of a slap in the face or a wake up call you could say. In 2020 they reviewed their season, picked themselves up but still finished 9th (like Carlton has). And we all know what happened in 2021, they were a powerhouse club, unstoppable! They went on to breeze through the finals and collect the cup like someone had left it on the curb for collection. Keep your heads up Blues fans. Carlton have a Premiership team in the making.
